Description

The Guide to Medical Histology originates from the Washington University School of Medicine histology (microscope anatomy) course materials that have been developed over the last 40 years. The new digital compilation in the form of an iBook was created by two teaching faculty, Dr. Dikranian and Dr. Bridgman, with the technical help of a former student and teaching assistant, Dr. Gary Grajales. It has been tested in medical student classes and refined in response to student feedback over the past three years. The guide is unique in that it goes well beyond the basics found in other digital resources for histology and represents a self-contained laboratory course in medical histology. It covers all the tissues and major organ systems of the body. Organized into 18 chapters with objectives for each, it contains a descriptive text with over 700 embedded annotated light and electron microscope images. In addition, it provides self-assessment through 18 quizzes containing over 160 questions (with instant response correct answers). Furthermore, there are links to video descriptions (movies) of the slides for each chapter and over 330 annotated virtual microscope slides (through slide-atlas.org). The latter atlas represents an especially important and useful learning component that was developed by Dr. Bridgman and Dr. Dikranian in association with Dr. Beverly Faulkner-Jones at Harvard University and Kitware, Inc. The links allow direct connection to these online resources without having to leave the iBook or login to an external web site. Finally a glossary provides definitions for technical terms.

Compatible with any Mac computer running OSX 10.11.5 or newer, any iPad running OS 9.3.3 or newer and the iPhone 6 running OS 9.3.3. Access to the online resources requires an internet connection.
