A 'House of Souls' is the collection of Machen short stories. The first story here is a pretty effective summation of the worldview that emerged from those newspaper articles- a reverence for sacrament above the occult or prosaic, for sensuality above asceticism, and a highly Blakeian belief in the notion that enlightenment resides right under our very noses all the time.
